In late March this year, I dropped by at the six boathouses standing at the edge of Lake Mikata, on the way back from an idyllic picnic I had with my drone at the plum orchard on the hills. The Mikata area of Fukui prefecture is known as one of the biggest producers of plums in Japan, and these six boathouses were used to moor boats that carry plums from small islands in five lakes here (Mikata Goko). In the '90s, roads and bridges were put in place and boats became redundant, so these boathouses did, too. Because of their picturesque appearance, the town has preserved them for tourism purposes, and recently has renovated three of them. My drone and I decided to become tourists, and paid a visit. They were so charming!
