Haneda Airport is getting a significant new addition today, September 1, 2026, with the opening of the Terminal 1 North Satellite Facility. It's the first major expansion of Terminal 1 since it opened in 1993, adding around 21,000 square meters of floor space and six new boarding gates, numbered 24 to 29.
For travelers, one of the biggest changes will be at boarding time. The new gates have fixed boarding bridges, meaning passengers won't need to rely on buses to get between the terminal and aircraft when using these gates. It's a fairly simple change, but one that should make getting on and off the plane a little easier, particularly for travelers with luggage or young children.
The new facility has also been designed to make getting around easier. There are 10 moving walkways, along with autonomous mobility services including the new "iino" vehicle. It can carry up to four people, is free to use, and doesn't require a reservation. WHILL's autonomous mobility service will also operate in the North Satellite, offering another option for passengers who need help getting around the airport.
There's more to the new space than practicality, too. The concourse and gate lounge use plenty of Japanese timber, plants, and natural materials, giving the area a warmer feel than you might expect from an airport.
Near Gate 26, the new FOREST LOUNGE will provide a place to sit, enjoy a drink, and use free Wi-Fi before a flight. It has 22 seats and is free for passengers with partner credit cards, while other travelers can pay for entry.
Families will also find a new kids' space using recycled wood and plastic bottle caps, adding a useful stop for those traveling with children.
For visitors flying into or out of Haneda, the North Satellite won't necessarily change the trip itself, but it should make time spent there a little easier and more comfortable. With the airport preparing for continued growth in air travel, today's opening is a welcome upgrade for passengers passing through Tokyo.
