Niigata Prefecture is getting international recognition, with National Geographic naming it one of its 25 Best of the World destinations for 2027. It is the only destination in Japan to make the annual list, with a unique art festival and centuries-old food traditions among the highlights.

Located on the Sea of Japan coast, Niigata is known for its heavy snowfall, ski resorts, rice fields, and sake. However, the latest recognition shines a spotlight on some of the region’s more unexpected attractions.

One of the biggest draws is the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, returning for its 10th edition from July 17 to November 7, 2027. The large-scale outdoor art festival transforms the countryside into an open-air gallery, with installations appearing in places such as abandoned schools, terraced rice fields and mountain tunnels. The artworks offer a different way to experience rural Japan, combining contemporary creativity with the landscapes and communities that surround them.

Food lovers have another reason to visit, particularly in Nagaoka, where traditional fermentation techniques remain an important part of local culture. The city’s approximately 1.6-kilometre Fermentation Trip walking route takes visitors past historic miso producers, sake breweries and long-established sweet shops. At HAKKO HOUSE, seasonal ingredients and fermented flavors take centerstage in an experience that explores Niigata’s distinctive snow-country food culture.

Of course, Niigata has plenty to offer beyond art and food. Visitors can enjoy skiing and snowboarding in winter, explore mountain scenery and beaches in warmer months, or discover local festivals throughout the year.

For travelers wanting to see a different side of Japan beyond its best-known cities, Niigata offers a compelling mix of culture, cuisine, and countryside. With its place on National Geographic’s 2027 list, it may be time to put this snowy region on the itinerary!
