Heian Jingu Michi

Shrines, museums, temples and autumn scenery

There are some streets that I really love in Kyoto, and Heian Jingu Michi is one of them. It stretches from Heian Shrine to Maruyama Park. Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art stands near Heian Shrine. A big red torii spans the road nearby and small touristy shops line the sides of the street. Beyond Sanjo Street it passes antique stores, restaurants and some beautiful hotels, then reaches Shoren-in Temple with a wonderful old tree that spreads its branches over moss covered roots. I often visited this tree, and I prefer its quiet green beauty to all the blossom laden sakura of spring time. Near Maruyama Park stands the huge gate of Chion-in.
