Summer days in Japan can be incredibly hot, but once the sun goes down, the atmosphere changes. Night-time events offer a chance to have some fun while enjoying a cooler (literally and figuratively) side of the season. In Fukuoka, a new event at Uminonakamichi Seaside Park is making the most of those summer evenings.
Seaside Night of Light and Wind will be held on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from August 15 through September 27, transforming the park's Plaza of Light and Wind into a glowing seaside evening destination.
From 6pm, palm trees will be illuminated in colorful lights, with the Hakata skyline and bay providing the backdrop. Visitors can settle into the Chill Area to enjoy the night view from outdoor seating, or pick up a free blue glowing lantern and wander through the illuminated plaza.
There will also be a handheld fireworks area, special food menus and a Night Dog Run, which takes advantage of the cooler evening temperatures. The event runs until 9pm, with last entry at 8pm.
Located on a sandbar between Hakata Bay and the Genkai Sea, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park is a destination in its own right. The enormous 350-hectare park is known for its seasonal flowers, recreational facilities and Animal Forest, where visitors can see animals including capybaras and kangaroos.
