Heian Jingu, Kyoto's strikingly vermilion-hued shrine, is well-known for its springtime displays of sakura (cherry blossoms). But a visit to the Shin'en garden here is worthwhile anytime of year. These summer scenes offer glimpses of ponds graced with lotus flowers, leafy green branches and a hint of the red-tinged maples to come.
