Japan is home to countless beautiful gardens, but few are as unique as Mizunomori Park in Shiga Prefecture. Located on the shores of Lake Biwa, the garden is one of the country's only botanical gardens dedicated to aquatic plants, and this summer it's celebrating its 30th anniversary with a special two-day festival.
Summer is one of the best times to visit, with colorful water lilies blooming across the outdoor ponds and impressive Paraguayan giant water lilies making their seasonal appearance. Visitors can also admire the garden's picturesque "Flower Shadow Pond," whose vibrant reflections have earned comparisons to a Monet painting.
The anniversary festival features a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. Highlights include commemorative ceremonies, talks by leading botanical experts, gardening workshops, and photo opportunities with beloved Shiga mascots, including the ever-popular Hikonyan.
The celebrations also include a special exhibition looking back on the garden's three decades through award-winning photographs, along with a limited-time anniversary shop selling original souvenirs, orchids, and locally produced goods.
Beyond the festival, the botanical garden itself is worth exploring. Home to more than 150 varieties of tropical and hardy water lilies, it offers beautiful displays throughout the year, while its greenhouse allows visitors to enjoy aquatic plants regardless of the season.
Before leaving, stop by the on-site restaurant to sample unique local specialties such as lotus soft serve ice cream, lotus noodles, and meals served on giant water lily-shaped plates.
