Spring in Kyoto wouldn’t be complete without illuminated cherry blossoms. Across the Nijojo castle grounds, projection mapping and light installations inspired by sakura will enhance key locations such as Ninomaru Palace, the South Gate wall, Sakura Garden, the Honmaru Turret Gate, and the Seiryu-en Garden.
For the first time, the remarkable Ninomaru Palace will also be accessible after dark. Visitors can explore this National Treasure at night, taking in its refined architectural features, including intricate gold-leaf wall paintings, while experiencing the unique atmosphere created by the interplay of light and shadow.
Renowned director Junichi Yasuda unveils an immersive theatre experience set against a colossal 5-by-29 metre LED screen, where sweeping visuals fill and transform the viewer’s entire field of vision. The production, known as “Shirogeki,” reimagines the historic Kan’ei Imperial Visit of 1626 through a contemporary artistic lens. The performance delivers a dynamic, multi-sensory show blending intense samurai and ninja sword combat, elegant Kyoto dance traditions, fully enveloping surround sound, and striking digital imagery.
Meanwhile, Nigiwai Square will host a vibrant marketplace offering Kyoto specialties, including local wines from Kyoto Winery Shijo Kawaramachi Brewery and craft beer from Nishijin Beer. The area will also feature exhibitions and sales of traditional crafts, along with interactive workshops led by skilled artisans—making this an event worth dedicating an entire evening to.
