Lower and Upper Afuri Shrine

Worshipping Mount Oyama's Rain God

Steve Morton   - 1분 읽은 시간

Believed by many farmers to enshrine the rain god 'Ooikazuchi-no-Kami', Mount Oyama's Afuri Shrine has been a special place of worship for several centuries. Although referred to collectively as 'Afuri Jinja', this shrine is actually located at two different sites.

Upper Afuri Shrine is situated at the top of Mount Oyama and contains several small buildings, whilst the bigger Lower Afuri Shrine can be found several hundred meters below.

Without doubt, Lower Afuri Shirne is the more impressive of the two, consisting of a large complex hosting many large buildings and containing several interesting sculptures. You can even feed a deer here!
