Japan isn't what anyone would call an underrated travel spot as a whole anymore, but there are still plenty of areas that fly under the radar while Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto get most of the attention. According to the Sydney Morning Herald's list of the world's most underrated destinations, Hiroshima and the Kumano Kodo stand out, and they're two places well worth exploring in greater detail.
Hiroshima is often defined by its tragic history, but the modern city is lively, welcoming, and full of energy. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum are essential visits, but beyond them the city offers leafy boulevards, a vibrant food scene, and friendly locals. Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is reason enough to stop by, and the layered, savory pancake is a comfort food beloved by travelers and locals alike. Nearby Miyajima Island adds another layer of charm, with its famous "floating" torii gate proving that even well-known sights can still feel magical.
As for the Kumano Kodo, this network of ancient pilgrimage trails across the Kii Peninsula showcases a completely different side of Japan. Where cities are so often about speed and precision, the Kumano Kodo is about quiet forests, mossy paths, and slowing down. Small villages, steaming onsen, and sacred shrines reward those who walk the trails, giving a personal and intimate view of Japan that many visitors miss.
The Sydney Morning Herald list was a good reminder that even in one of the world's most popular destinations, there are still places that surprise, offering depth and discovery without needing to compete for attention.
